Revitalize Your Summer Planters
Is your summer garden looking exhausted and in need of a refresh? Here are three ways to breathe new life into your planters before fall takes over.

- Fertilize and Trim
Some plants, such as petunias, may appear weary by August. Giving them a substantial trim allows for fresh growth and blooms. Consider using a fertilizer with a high middle number (e.g., 5-10-5), containing elevated levels of phosphorus to promote blooming and fruit formation. Factor in the weather, as hot conditions can contribute to plant fatigue. Providing a trim and essential nourishment, alongside cooler weather, can often rejuvenate your planters for the remainder of summer.
- Replace Tired Plants
If certain plants are visibly exhausted, overgrown, or high-maintenance, it might be time to remove them and introduce fresh alternatives. Consider adding colorful options suitable for the upcoming fall season, such as geraniums, grasses, mums, and pansies. These selections can transition well into the autumn months and revitalize your planters
Local stores and nurseries will start getting in flowering cabbage and kale, mums and pansies that can be added in place of summer flowers and will make great fall planter options. If you have shade, coleus, impatiens, hosts, fuchsia, grasses, spikes, begonias, flowering cabbage and kale, mums, pansies, and ivy geraniums make great options heading into fall. - Embrace Fall Plantings
If your planters need a complete overhaul, consider removing the current summer plants and introducing new fall-loving options. Create a vibrant display using fresh potting mix and a selection of fall plantings. Consider incorporating locally-grown mums for a stunning autumnal touch. Wait until the weather cools before purchasing to ensure longevity throughout the fall season, and remember that once they finish blooming, you can replant them in your garden to bloom again next year.

Refreshing your summer planters can breathe new life into your outdoor space, providing a welcoming sight for the changing seasons.
